  • What is Fibroscan?

Fibroscan is a test to measures the amount of thickening or scarring of tissues (fibrosis) in the liver. It is also known as transient electrography. This test assist in aaccurately diagnosing liver tissues abnormalities which helps in determining the stage of the liver disease, assessing the patient’s progress, and predicting treatment responses. Most patients will not show any symptoms. However, some might have fatigue, malaise, or abdominal discomfort on the right upper side. The test can be performed with or without ultrasound.

  • What are the Indications?
    • In distinguishing hepatic cirrhosis from non-cirrhosis in persons with viral hepatitis e.g., Hepatitis B & C.
    • Drug-induced liver injury.
    • Other chronic liver diseases e.g.:
      • Hereditary hemochromatosis,
      • Primary Biliary cirrhosis.
      • Wilson’s disease.
  • When Fibroscan in not Indicated?
    • Fatty (change of) liver, not elsewhere classified.
    • Abnormal results of liver function studies.
    • Autoimmune hepatitis.
    • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
    • Liver inflammation (e.g. active hepatitis)
    • Bile duct obstruction (e.g. Cholestasis)
    • Mass lesions within the liver (e.g. tumour)
    • Liver congestion (e.g. heart failure)
  • What are the common risks/complications?
    • There are no complications for Fibroscan.

  • ICD and CPT codes must be coded to the highest level of specificity.
  • All Fibroscan requests require pre-approval from Nextcare.
